Aircraft Tire Valves, Inner Tubes and Tires

For aircraft tires to be able to withstand repeated takeoffs and landings, it's imperative that the tires are crafted from durable materials. However, they are still going to wear out over time. To care for your plane and ensure its safety, you will want to change the tires, inner tubes and valves as recommended.

What Makes Aircraft Tires Different?

General aviation (GA) aircraft tires are crafted with a process called bias ply. With this method, plies of reinforcing material are laid at angles of 30 degrees and 60 degrees, and it creates the reinforcement an aircraft tire needs to withstand takeoffs, landings and general use.

When to Replace Aircraft Inner Tubes and Tires

It's important to inspect aircraft tires before every flight, looking for signs of damage and wear. While a tire may last up to 500 landings, some wear out well before that and need replacing. One way to tell if it's time to replace a tire is to inspect the tread depth. Once the treads are worn down to the groove, it's time for replacement. Deep tears in the tire are also a sign it's time to replace them.

Types of Aircraft Tubes and Tires
