Types of Aviation Instruments

The basic aircraft instruments are called the six pack. These are the instruments that provide the pilot with crucial details about a plane's operation: 

• Altimeter: The altimeter is a pressure-sensitive instrument that shows the plane's altitude, or height above sea level.
• Airspeed indicator: Another pressure-sensitive instrument, the airspeed indicator reports the plane's speed, usually in knots.
• Attitude indicator: The attitude indicator is a gyroscopic instrument that shows the aircraft's position in relation to the horizon.
• Heading indicator: Another gyroscopic instrument, the heading indicator displays the aircraft's heading.
• Vertical speed indicator: The vertical speed indicator uses pressure to depict a plane's rate of climb or descent.
• Turn coordinator: The turn coordinator shows the direction and rate of a turn, as well as whether the turn is coordinated.
