Purpose of Aircraft Engine Instruments
In any aircraft, it's important to accurately measure operating parameters such as fuel flow and levels, electrical loads and pressure. When it comes to the engine specifically, pilots need to know exactly how the aircraft is operating at all times with accurate, real-time information. This allows them to adjust as necessary to ensure the engine runs as it should during flight. Typical information that engine instruments display includes:
- Oil pressure: This gauge indicates whether the oil pressure is within operating limits so the engine gets the lubrication it needs.
- Exhaust gas temperature: The exhaust stream temperature is monitored to help prevent temperature-related damage to engine components.
- Oil temperature: Oil may lose its lubrication properties when its temperature is too high.
