Trutrak FLight Systems
Trutrak Digital Autopilots represents the greatest advance in General Aviation autopilot technology since the invention of the Century III Autopilot in 1965.
The Trutrak autopilot can be defined as an orthogonal rate system. The gyroscopic rate sensors are installed so as to sense motion about each of the major axes (roll, yaw, and pitch). These sensors generate the fast signal responses necessary to create an autopilot with the best possible dynamic performance.
Flying an airplane well about the roll-axis requires the velocity of aileron movement be directly proportional to rate of roll for small movement. Aileron position corrections should not lag behind the motion of the aircraft. Aileron control systems that use a turn coordinator cannot do this. In turbulence, yaw disturbances can cause undesirable aileron movement, sometimes so severe that controls may even momentarily move in the wrong direction. The challenge at Trutrak is to create autopilot systems with the best dynamic performance available – systems that do not need to be disengaged in turbulence.
The complete Trutrak flight control system combines within a single panel-mounted programmer/computer package, all the electronic and sensing elements needed for roll and pitch functions and interfaces to a rate-gyro controlled yaw damper.
Basic directional control is provided by digital selection of a GPS track to be flown, eliminating drift and crosswind correction, items that need attention with DG type systems. In the GPS NAV mode of operation, the system responds to digital guidance information (GPS steering).
The vertical portion of the system contains a digital altimeter and associated altitude selector capable of selection in increments as small as 50 feet. Altitude transitions can be made by either airspeed or vertical speed selection. If an upward vertical speed is selected beyond the capability of the aircraft, the aircraft will not stall. Instead, the Trutrak autopilot will cause the aircraft to climb at a preset minimum safe airspeed. This is the only known system to provide this safety feature.
