TFM B11C997 Display Model DieCast P-38 Lightning, Yippee 1:48 Scale, Franklin Mint $70.00

Designed by engineer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson and his team at Lockheed in 1938, the P-38 Lightning was developed for the U.S. Army Air Corp. and proved a complete departure from conventional aircraft of its era. With its large size, powerful twin engine design, twin-boom configuration, and enough fire-power to sink a ship, this plane was to become on of the most feared fighters of WW II.

Entering the service of the USAAC in October of 1941, the P-38 would go on to top an unprecedented list of "firsts" – first Lockheed-designed military aircraft to go into series production, first twin-engine interceptor to serve with the USAAC, first production fighter powered by the Allison V-1710 in-line engine, first modern fighter equipped with a tricycle landing gear, first fighter to use a bubble canopy, first fighter to achieve speeds over 400 mph, first USAAF fighter to shoot down a German aircraft, first USAAF fighter to carry out an escort mission to Berlin, and the first USAAF plane to land in Japan after that country's surrender. It was also the only American fighter in production at the time of Pear Harbor that was still in production at war's end, and shot down more Japanese planes during the war than any other U.S. fighter.
