Though originally conceived as a lightweight interceptor, the P-47 Thunderbolt was eventually developed into a heavyweight fighter, and became one of the most famous fighter planes of its era. The first production model was delivered to the AAF in 1942 and flew its first combat mission over Western Europe in the spring of 1943. Throughout the length of its service during WWII, the P-47 saw action in nearly every theater of the war, and was used extensively as both a high-altitude escort fighter and low-level fighter-bomber.
Nicknamed "Jug" by the pilots who flew them, the P-47 quickly earned a reputation for ruggedness due to its sturdy construction and powerful Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine and could continue to fly even after receiving severe damage. By wars end, over 15,600 P-47s had been produced and were in used by the air forces of Brazil, England, France, Mexico and the Soviet Union. Logging nearly two million flight hours during its war service, the Thunderbolt was responsible for the destruction of more than 7,000 enemy aircraft in the European theater alone. In the years following WWII, the P-47 continued to serve actively with the air forces of over 15 nations.
