TFM B11B628 Display Model, DieCast P-40E Warhawk 1:48 Scale, Franklin Mint $70.00

The P-40 Warhawk was developed by Curtiss Aircraft in 1939 to meet the U.S. Army's planned expansion, and the first planes were delivered in June of 1940. Though the P-40 was the first U.S. plane to exceed speeds of 300 mph, it was still outclassed by opposing planes in speed, agility and climbing rate. Still, this plane's remarkable toughness, and its ability to absorb punishment and continue to fly, more than compensated for its deficiencies. Combat radius was approximately 850 miles and standard armament included two .50 caliber machine guns in the nose and four .30 caliber guns in the wings.

Its first action came in defense of Pearl Harbor and the Philippines at the outset of WWII, and were soon fighting over the skies of China as the aircraft of the famed Flying Tigers. It was also flown in North Africa in 1943 by the equally famous 99th Fighter Squadron, the first all-black unit, who had some 40 aces claim five or more kills flying the P-40 between 1942-45. The plane also saw action in the Aleutian Islands, the Southwest Pacific, the Middle and Far East, Italy and Russia. By the end of its distinguished career, over 14,000 P-40s has been produced, serving the air forces of 28 nations.
