Messerschmitt Bf-109 Top View

As the Luftwaffe's standard single seat fighter plane during the first three years of World War II, the Bf-109 Messerschmitt had few rivals. The plan saw its very first action over the skies of Spain during that nation's civil war in the early thirties. Designed by Prof Willy Messerschmitt, it quickly proved its superiority over the Italian and Soviet planes it faced. When Germany invaded Poland in 1939, the Bf-109 led the way, quickly destroying Poland's obsolete air force and heralding in a new style of warfare called Blitzkreig.

After Germany's defeat during the Battle of Britain in 1940, the Bf-109 was relegated to the role of a defensive plane, Messerschmitt Bf-109 Flyoverbut later versions were soon designed for various roles and saw action in every theater of the war. On the Eastern Front, where the plane faced inferior Russian fighters, many German pilots reached 100+ kills, 15 reached 200+ kills and two even scored an unprecedented 300+ aerial victories.

It is estimated that some 35,000 Bf-109's of all types were produced during the war and many saw continued service both in the Czech and Israeli air forces after the war.
