The B-24 Liberator came to life on December 29, 1939 as an answer to the United States Army Air Corps request for a heavy bomber that would exceed the performance of the B-17 bomber. Over 18,000 Liberators were produced for use in World War II, making it the most heavily produced American aircraft of the time. This smaller bomber was able to handle farther flights while carrying bigger bomb loads. With over one hundred modifications and conversions, the B-24 Liberator was used for numerous other assignments including photography, cargo-hauling, maritime patrol, reconnaissance missions and personnel transport. Of the thousands of B-24's built only three remain in airworthy condition.
