Sky-Tec Flyweight™ Starters for Textron Lycoming aircraft engines are the lightest, strongest & best-selling lightweight starter available. 

The permanent magnet (PM/LS) model features internal gear reduction to provide a rugged, reliable design, high-torque, twice the spin and typically a ten pound weight savings over stock OEM starters resulting in faster and easier engine starts - especially improving hot engine start performance.  

Precision machined starter mount - no shims required.

These starters are applicable to all non-geared Lycoming engines from O-235 through O-540 and are FAA PMA’ed for use on certificated aircraft as well as home-built aircraft. 

All Sky-Tec starters come with a 2-year factory warranty.  No Bendix drive is ever used on a SkyTec starter.

LS models have the solenoid at the 2:30 o’clock position (as viewed from the front) and the PM models have the solenoid at the 7:30 position.  They also feature an integrated starter solenoid for homebuilt applications not wishing to install a separate firewall solenoid.

LS/PM models weigh 7.8 lbs.

How is the ST5 starter different?

The ST5 starter couples a high power 2.2 kW motor with an innovative solenoid-engaged (and disengaged) drive system completely disengages the powerful permanent magnet motor while the starter is unpowered eliminating possible TCM starter adapter wear while providing authoritative, high-RPM starting.  Positive solenoid enabled engagement and disengagement allows the TCM starter adapter to fully unwrap under all normal operating conditions thus greatly prolonging starter adapter life.

How do I know which one to buy?

If your TCM engine has a right-angle starter adaptor at the rear of the engine and a clean source of nearly located battery voltage, chances are this starter is the right one for your application.

The High-Torque Inline (NL Model) starter features a high-torque, wound field motor; light weight (of course - only 9.4 lbs.) and advanced design that is capable of replacing nearly all original equipment as well as certified replacement starters on non-geared Lycoming engine-powered aircraft. The key to the starter's broad adaptability is its compact, inline solenoid/motor arrangement that fits well within the profile of Lycoming's original equipment starters.

While the High-Torque Inline starter's shape is similar to a significantly "shrunk-down" Prestolite, it's composition is greatly advanced over the old, heavy OEM and Bendix-driven lightweight starters including Bendix-free, electromechanical engagement ( and disengagement!), 12 or 24 volt versatility in each starter (add jumper for 12V, remove for 24V), and a kick-back resistant shear pin that will avoid costly repairs in the rare likelihood of a kickback.

Thanks to its rugged, compact, inline configuration,the new HTI starter will fit any aircraft with a non geared, Lycoming engine without any modification. It is especially well suited for: Cessna Cardinals, Mooney M20J's, C172 model M thru L, RG Cessnas, All Short-Wing Pipers, Air-conditioned Piper Singles, Rugged operating conditions, Helicopters, Charter Operators, Voltage-challenged applications, Applications with minimal clearance in front of and around the starter.
