Total Manufacturing Control – Tempest™ Original filters are the only aviation oil filters made in a state of the art aviation oil filter plant built solely for, and dedicated to, the manufacture of aviation oil filters. Total process control helps insure the highest standard of quality.
Magnetic Filtration System – The Tempest™ Original filter has more media area (311square inches) than any other aviation oil filter. An internal magnet, designed to attract fine steel particles to small to be caught by the filter media that can be harmful to the engine, effectively increases the filtration performance of the filter.
Improved Nut Welds – Nut welds are so strong that the can will distort without breaking the welds! During production testing nuts are actually ripped away from the can – the base metal must fail, the welds must not (see photo). Using Tempest™ Original filters means no more frustration with installation nuts falling off.
Meets TCM bypass Specification of 12-14psi, reducing risk of premature bypass that can result in unfiltered oil flowing to your engine.
Burst strength of 600 psi – Significant improvements to the roll seam process used on the bottom of the can substantially improved the design burst strength of the Tempest™ Original oil filter to over 600 pounds per square inch, exceeding the ARP 1400 standard by 50 percent. Extra strength gives added assurance that Tempest oil filters are made to withstand the harshest operating conditions.
Non-Stick Gaskets – Tempest™ Original oil filters incorporate especially lubricated synthetic rubber base gaskets made from a proprietary compound. This helps insure proper torque during installation and easy removal.

Champion Oil Filter Element Construction
Champion Full Flow Oil Filters are designed to supply a continuous flow of filter-clean oil to vital engine parts. Champion's Strata-Kleen filter media is a full-pleat, resin-impregnated cellulosic micronic filter media designed to trap all harmful particles including metallic chips resulting from abnormal wear. Because the oil flows through many layers of locked in fibers, there is no migration of fiber material to clog engine oil passages or affect bearing surfaces. According to industry-approved tests, the Champion oil filter traps more dirt and harmful particles during its operating time than any other similar filter.
The filter media surrounds a corrugated steel center support tube providing support for each convoluted pleat of filter media, adding significant protection from filter collapse-pressure failure especially during cold-start engine conditions.
Champion Oil Filter Cartridge Types
Champion offers two types of oil filter cartridge to cover all existing aircraft piston engine lube oil system applications.
- Replacement elements service engine-mounted or line-installed filter systems incorporating a permanent housing assembly.
- Modern Spin-on oil filters contain the element, incorporating the anti-drainback valve mechanism (and internal bypass valve 48108-1/48109-1), sealed in a disposable housing.
Champion Spin-On Oil Filter Construction
Champion Spin-on oil filters have a 1" hex wrench pad spot-welded to a tough 8-gauge steel case designed to meet or exceed engine manufacturer specifications. Safety-wire tabs are conveniently located on hex nut for easy access.
Heavy-duty steel mounting plate is cemented, spot-welded and crimped to case. Even under abnormal oil temperatures and pressures, this primary part of the filter ensures freedom from troublesome oil leakage when installed per instructions printed on the case.
Silicone impregnated filter gasket aids in future removal.
Revised shorter stud length on CH 48110-1 for tight clearance applications.
